Bhopal / Indore Mass Rapid Transit

Bophal / Indore, India, 2014

The cities of Bhopal and Indore are business and industrial areas in central India. They  are witnessing extremely rapid growth leading to an expected doubling of population between 2020 (around 2m inhabitants each) and 2040.

To cope with that development the province government strives for upgrading the existing public transport to a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) with a Metro network as backbone.
Preliminary studies have been performed and lead to the decision in favor of a Light Metro on independent right of way and network lengths of around 75 km each.

LRTC is involved in the project as international expert for specific operational-related design aspects and acts as a subcontractor to the main contractor Rohit Associates Architects & Engineers. Based on the approved studies LRTC will perform the following services:

  • Elaboration of train operation concept
    • Definition of headway based on demand data
    • Definition of operation hours, calculation of running and turnover time
    • Development of basic operation timetable
    • Definition of rolling stock numbers & capacity
    • Dimensioning of depot/workshop concept and stabling requirements

  • Elaboration of depot / workshop concept
    • Master layout for one major and one minor depot
    • Definition of requirements for suitable land plots
    • Rough identification of operationally advantageous areas including on-site inspection
