Move Windhoek

Urban Public Transport Development in Windhoek, Namibia

Windhoek, with a population of 330.000, is the capital and the biggest city of Namibia.

Public transport has only a minor role in the city, partly due to low service frequencies on the few available bus lines. Light Rail Transit Consultants and its partner Dornier Consulting were awarded a project to develop an overall concept for public transport system reorganization in the city. The project is funded within an international support program for Windhoek sustainable development, sponsored by GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit). The tasks include design of a new attractive line network with increased service frequencies and introduction of an integrated ticketing solution. Future possible developments such as Bus Rapid Transit or Light Rail are to be evaluated in the long-term perspective. Implementation strategies are to be elaborated and analyzed in respect to their economic feasibility.

The project started in August 2014 and will be completed in February 2015. LRTC team welcomes this challenging project and is looking forward to a successful cooperation with the City of Windhoek!
